Cape Town Weather

What's the Weather Like Today?

Cape Town Weather can be likened to Mediterranean weather - it's warm, dry and sunny most of the summer months with occasional days of rain or overcast spells.

The Cape Doctor is a wind that also visits during the summer. The warm wind blows from the South East and can pick up quite a speed. It's not been unheard of for buses to be blown over in the centre of town. Fortunately, this doesn't happen often!

Usually the wind cools the air, making Cape Town one of the most pleasant places to stay in the World, because although the sun is fierce with its heat, the wind keeps the temperature down, making it so much more bearable.

Humidity is low in Cape Town, making it comfortable to sleep at night and move about during the day.

Light cotton clothing and beach-wear are the order of the day, but you may well like to have a cardigan or light jacket with you for evening wear, when smart casual will take you most places.

In and around Cape Town itself, temperatures are usually around 25oC in summer, with a few days up into the 30oC's.

During the winter months of June, July and August, the temperature drops and storms can prevail. Needless to say that this is not usually beach and sunbathing weather, but brisk walks along the beaches are still fantastic at this time of the year. Most of the rain needed to fill the rivers and streams, supplying the water to the city of Cape Town falls at this time.

When the sun does come, gentle warm rays bathe the land, making it a great place to come and paint, because the light is so good.

Autumn months of March, April and May the temperature is noticably cooler first thing in the mornings with dew on the grass, but once the day gets going, it soon warms to a comfortable 20 - 22oC.

Spring months are wonderfully refreshing with bright clear days of sunshine. It's these months of October, November and December that are famous for the amazing displays of spring flowers. Jacaranda trees line the streets with the most fantastic lavender blue coloured flowers and the fragrance is heavenly.

One of the best places to view spring flowers is up on the West Coast, about an hour to two hours drive out of Cape Town.

The sun gets up early in Cape Town, so be prepared to be woken early in the mornings if your room doesn't have black-out linings!

Cape Town has so much to offer visitors at any time of the year. It's not just a beach destination, although you'll see from our Beaches page that there are some spectacular beaches, with all sorts of asociated sports and leisure activities.

How about visiting in August? What can you expect to do?
