Cape Town Travel - The How's and Why-for's of Getting Around
Travel around Cape Town and you won't have to go far to find spectacular views, stunning scenery and superb locations. Almost everywhere you look offers something different and of course, when you're on a limited time schedule, the most difficult task of all is working out what to do first and how to get there.
Travelling around any country and experiencing the lifestyle that it has on offer is best started by plenty of research before leaving the comfort of your own home.
One of the first ports of call is getting that flight booked, because at certain times of year, Cape Town is THE destination everyone wants to visit. For more help and advice on booking flights,
go to our flights page.
Having worked out how you're getting to Cape Town, how are you going to travel around? Do you want to let someone else take the strain, or have you already planned exactly what you want to see?
If, like us, you enjoy picking out different places to visit before you get on vacation, one of the best ways to get about is by car. You're then in charge of your day - going where and when you please. Visit some of our favourite places to plan your vacation.
Car rental is very easy in Cape Town. All the usual names, plus many more besides, so either chose your regular car rental company or maybe
try our recommendations
for friendly, easy service with a smile! Peace of mind is everything when you're driving in a foreign country.
We hired our car with Budget, using our car hire pages and they were excellent.
Michael picked up the car, which was brand new, having only done about 60 miles. The staff were extremely helpful, even to the point when Michael came to return the car, his flights had been altered, which left about three hours to kill.
As the house is only 20 minutes away from the airport, Michael raced round to where he had left the car not ten minutes before. The staff handed him back the keys and he spend the time with us on the beach!
However, if you're looking for more structured travelling, then look no further than an experienced tour company who can meet your every need.
Like everything in the Western Cape, choice is huge, so take the time to decide what sort of company, whether large and more impersonal, where you can get lost in the crowd or small, intimate and friendly with more personal service. Perhaps if you're travelling on your own you'd prefer to go with a crowd of people, to make new friends; or if you've brought the family, it's easier to travel as a group.
We travel by car, which of course, we have on rental and some of our favourite places to visit, all within a few hours drive are:
- The Cape Winelands - the choice is endless!
- Cape Point - the place where the two Oceans meet
- Hout Bay - Superb beaches and place to get great Fish and Chips
- Boulders Beach - watch those Penguins swim
- The Waterfront - hive of activity, where every whim is catered for
Of course, travel by boat or ship is close to everyone's heart here in Cape Town too! Just watch the Portuguese fishing boats coming back in with the days catch, or the steam boats chugging about in the harbour, sightseeing from the water itself.
Getting out onto the sea is great too, if you've a mind - you don't have to be a seasoned sailor to experience the view of that incredible mountain from a boat!
There's more travel in the form of adventurous shark diving or fishing for big game fish, or more gentle pursuits such as mountain biking and horse riding!
Now you can see why we say that there's so much to see and do in Cape Town, you have to keep coming back to see and do a bit more!
