Flights to Cape Town
These days, flights to Cape Town come in from just about anywhere in the world. Since Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa in 1994, more and more people have wanted to visit this fantastic country and airlines have had to compete to serve their customers.
Flying more directly over other countries in Africa has cut down flying times considerably and made reaching Cape Town easier. When I first visited the Western Cape, I made two hops, flying to Frankfurt, Germany with a short stop, then down to Windhoek, Namibia, before finally arriving in Cape Town, 17 hours later!
Now, flight times from Heathrow, London, are down to just under 12 hours, direct.
Although many more airlines fly into Cape Town, getting seats on them can still prove arduous, especially if you aren't flexible about arrival and departure dates. Booking well in advance is advisable, especially if there is more than one of you.
We book our flights at least six months in advance for the very busy period of Christmas, and even then we have to be flexible. Mind you, the children don't have a problem with missing a few days of school!
However, it's always worth trying for flights, even if it's last minute, because people always change their schedules or unforseen difficulties crop up. Shopping around online is the quickest and easiest route to finding those elusive plane tickets.
Most of the airlines have high season fares around Christmas, with slightly cheaper plane tickets until mid December. After the middle of January, the cost comes down again. Needless to say that the cheapest time to travel is in the Cape's winter months of June, July and August. This is when you'll get the cheapest flights.
Most people travel to Cape Town for the summer months. Naturally, the warm Mediterranean-like temperatures and lifestyle make this an ideal destination for beach holidays, of which the Western Cape has plenty, but there is so much to do in Cape Town, that a visit even in the cooler winter months is never dull!
Having decided on what time of year you're going to visit South Africa (and for how long), get that flight booked, so that you can plan the rest of your vacation, safe in the knowledge that you'll definitely be going!
